Why iPhones Save Photos as HEIC
Starting with iOS 11, Apple switched the default camera capture format from JPEG to HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container). Based on HEVC/H.265 compression, HEIC stores photos in approximately half the file size of traditional JPEGs while supporting 16-bit color depth and computational Live Photo sequences.
However, when you transfer your photos to a Windows PC, an Android phone, or attempt to upload them to government forms, job portals, or printing kiosks, you will frequently encounter errors because HEIC is not universally supported.
Method 1: Fast In-Browser Conversion (No Software Installation)
The fastest and most private way to convert iPhone photos is using client-side WebAssembly right in your browser:
- Navigate to the HEIC to JPG Converter on ImageConverterFree.info.
- Drag your
.heicphotos into the dropzone (up to 50 photos in one batch). - Click Convert All. The compiled WebAssembly engine decodes the Apple HEVC stream locally in your computer RAM.
- Click Download All as ZIP to instantly save all converted JPG files to your Downloads folder.
Security note: Your private photos are never uploaded to any remote server or stored in the cloud. The processing takes place 100% inside your browser window.
Method 2: Change iPhone Camera Settings to Most Compatible
If you want your iPhone to capture standard JPEG photos automatically moving forward:
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Scroll down and tap Camera.
- Tap Formats.
- Select Most Compatible instead of High Efficiency.
Your iPhone will now capture all new photos in standard JPEG format (note that 4K at 60fps video and cinematic modes may still require High Efficiency).
Batch Conversion Tips
